  • Can I Start At Anytime?
Yes, new students can start at any time. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before class time to fill out a release form. Students with prior capoeira experience are welcome, but must start with a beginner or all-levels class, regardless of level. Participation in intermediate to advanced classes is by instructor invitation only.
  • When Is Your Beginner Class And How Much Does It Cost?
Please refer to our ‘Training Schedule’ section in the side-bar on the right of this site. Training fees are MYR100 per month and MYR25 per casual drop-in class.
  • Where Is Your Academy Located?
Please refer to our ‘Academia’ section in the side-bar on the right of this site.
  • Can I Observe Class?
Depending on space, quiet observers are always welcome. Parents are welcome to stay and observe their child in class as well.
  • What Should I Wear To Class?
New students should wear sweats and t-shirts or other workout clothing. Shoes are not recommended but if your feet are blistered or sore, wear thin soled or split soled sports shoes. In order to participate in our events, you are encouraged to wear our official Bantus Capoeira abadas (Official white capoeira pants) and Bantus Capoeira t-shirts.
  • How Much Do Uniforms Cost?
Bantus Capoeira abadas (Official white capoeira pants) cost MYR170 per pair, training pants (multi coloured with designs) cost MYR160 per pair. The pants are imported from Brazil. We regularly design limited edition Bantus Capoeira t-shirts ranging from MYR25 to MYR45 per shirt.
  • What Can I Expect?
Be prepared to work out! Capoeira is a very physical activity. Since we play capoeira in bare feet mostly, we suggest using sports tape to prevent blisters. The normal class structure starts with warm-ups, stretching, strength work, partner drills according to level, more ab work and we finish off with either music or a quick roda.
  • What Can I Do About Muscular Aches And Soreness After Training?
It is normal to experience muscle soreness after your first few classes or a long lapse of time between training. Make sure you stretch properly during your warm-ups and stretch again when you warm-down. Other than that, you should try following our post training maintenance guide here.
  • What Instruments Are Used In Capoeira?
The main instruments used in capoeira are the berimbau, atabaque and pandeiro.
  • Where Can I Find Capoeira Music?
You can download our music from here.
  • What are the dos and don’ts in the roda?
Read about our roda etiquette here.

Are there any classes held in places like Cheras? This is because I stay in Cheras and it’s kinda far from Cheras to PJ. Even if u don’t, is there a map where you can show me how to get there? (PJ, your place)

i think the one that’s highlighted in red are scheduled class days?

could you guys clear sumthin’ up? capoiera is a martial art correct? so.. wud there be sparrings? contact sparrings?

6

tartaruga:

2005-03-12: 13:28:33

The capoeira classes in Celebrity Fitness are conducted by Instructor Rafael, the principal instructor of Bantus.

Class days are highlighted in red.

Capoeira is a fusion of dance, fight and martial art. There are non-contact sparring in most classes and contact sparring is occasionally practiced in advanced classes.

Beginners may attend up to 3 classes per week, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays are designated beginner’s classes. Beginners may attend the advance classes at the instructor’s discretion and whether the class is already full.

Should I check with my doctor first before joining? Im turning 30 this yr, not that fit but not a slob either ( somewhere in between).

8

tartaruga:

2005-03-18: 09:20:55

Andri: Yeah, you should just check with your doctor before joining. capoeira is not very forgiving to old injuries if you have any. But your age is definitly not a factor in taking up capoeira!

Hi, is there any difference from learning capoeira here, with say learning from somewhere else in KL (like the local Y at Brickfields)? Does different Maestre teach different moves or syllabus? Who mostly joins Bantus? Malays? Chinese?

quecka:

2005-03-31: 17:22:16

hi guys, Nope, no classes in Penang as at yet. We are trying to work out an arrangement to have classes there in the future. Amir: Yeah classes are near Atria. Same row as Public Bank. We teach the contemporary style of capoeira whereas YMCA teaches capoeira angola. I have been informed that classes at the Y are off for the moment. We have a mix of all races at the Academy. Drop by to train starting this Friday!

A warm welcome to all of you! For all those who are keen on joining us for classes, you’d be pleased to note that we’ll be opening up an additional academia just down the street from our present premises near Atria, possibly within the next couple of months. Watch this space. emoticon

If you can’t bear the wait, just drop by at any of our beginners’ classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for a trial. Come early to make sure that you’ve got a space for yourself.

Looking forward to having you join the Bantus family. emoticon

Because I’m very interested in capoeira… For your information, I’m playing badminton with my frens every saturday and sunday. Is that enough for me to join your classes? Thanks

why are there no capoeira class in penang? why only in selangor?

23

siriema:

2005-04-01: 15:22:06

Hi guys,

It’s wonderful to know that the interest in capoeira is not just confined to the Klang Valley—we find it tremendously encouraging!

However, do bear in mind that we’re a relatively new establishment in Malaysia. It’s logistically quite difficult to set up branches in other states which can offer you the same standard of training and guidance that you would expect from our school. The main people involved in running the group are all based in PJ or KL.

Moreover, it takes years to train up instructors whom you, as students, can trust to be teaching you correctly.

So for the time being, we’ll have to put off our plans of expanding to other states or regions until we are confident that we can do a proper job of it, to be fair to both the school and its students.

To those who aren’t living in the Klang Valley, you’re still most welcome to visit us should you be in town.

24

siriema:

2005-04-01: 15:27:19

Kasorrga: There’s only one way for you to find out—come try out a class for free! emoticon If you play badminton competitively then I do believe you may have the stamina to last you through our sessions. Don’t worry about it though, as all our regular students have done well in buffing up because they were consistent in training—even the girls!

Open a capoeira class near ampang area plz emoticon i’m really interested emoticon

27

lynn:

2005-04-02: 11:37:43

raven: You’d be surprised at how similar Portuguese is to the Malay language. A “roda” (pronounced ho-da) is literally a circle where the capoeiristas play within. This is why we can afford to play in small areas by the roadside as we are trained to make small movements emoticon

28

ligeirim:

2005-04-02: 11:45:07

To those of you who want capoeira in Penang, well, I’m from Penang! I work in Selangor so that I can join capoeira! You can do the same emoticon

But seriously, just be patient. Like Siriema said, we’re doing our best!

Those in the Klang Valley, what are you waiting for? Drop by

2005-04-03: 21:24:13

hi u all.id like a question about capoeira training. i broke my right shoulder (about 1 year) n a fractured left elbow (10 years ago). can i train?

31

tartaruga:

2005-04-07: 10:56:03

Panjang: Sure you can still train. But best is to get the “OK” from your physician first. Some exercises in capoeira could make an old injury worse. This is because your old injury never healed properly, and capoeira does use muscles and movements which you’ll never usually use when you’re sedentary.

Capoeira is great. I first saw u guys at Bangsar when you had a performance there, right infront of guardian! I was also asked to talk about capoeira on tv at that time. I had a clue of what it was coz I am a personal trainer myself and the gym I was attached to at that time wanted capoeira as one of its aerobic class. The performance was great guys and yes I would love to join the team as soon as I get time off! Cheers!

2005-04-23: 06:54:08

Ah, a question, if you will. How much of your actions are ‘combat techniques’, and how much is merely fitness and ‘dancing’ (apologies, I have no idea how else to term your movements, and no offense meant)?

38

quecka:

2005-04-30: 11:11:34

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the interest and questions. Lets try to answer as much as we can.

1. So far, we don’t have any branches outside of KL but that could change in the future (maybe six months down the road, who knows)! Keep checking this site for updates. However, you guys are welcome to drop in whenever you are in the Klang Valley.

2. The old angola and regional debate. This one cannot answer in full here. It would take too long. In a nutshell, angola is lower to the ground and more traditional. Regional is faster and more acrobatic . At Bantus be practice both but students will start with regional.

3. We will have a new training schedule soon as we are expanding the academy. Look out for this in the coming month!

Axe! Quecka

i’m only 15 but i’m a pretty tall guy. about 6ft 1 i think. I’m also quite heavy, does this make me ill suited to Capoiera?

42

also, is there an age limit? is 15 too young?

43

how old is too old for the classes?

44

lynn:

2005-05-19: 19:08:52

15 isnt too young at all as we actually hv classes for kids as young at 8 yrs old!

Age, height & weight isnt really an issue when it comes to capoeira. All you need is some perseverance & enthusiam.

Pls do join us for a class or 2 & find out for yourself emoticon

Hi Cass, 9pm’s already at the tail-end of the class so you would have missed out on the bulk of the training. You can still join in, provided that there is space—but you may not benefit much, unfortunately.

50

quecka:

2005-06-28: 01:22:24

Good question. We do not practice capoeira as a religious activity. Capoeira to Bantus is an extremely rewarding and fun fitness, health, community and lifestyle activity. Now is the time to join as we have got a new intake of students coming in right now! emoticon

Hi There, Just attented the introductory class on Monday 27th June 2005 (Will join on the 1st of July) emoticon ! What can i say ? AWESOME ! really gives all of ya a reason to move around and keep in shape (And also stop all the bad habits like smoking hahah) ... think about it learning to dance, spar, and get a complete workout at the same time (Plus the culture part) ! For all those eager to join, stop thinking and just give it a try ! Thinking leads to more complications which then leads to unwillingness to progress … break out of the loop and have a great time while you are at it ! Cheers

First off, Great site, and kudos to those involved in the local capoeira scene. I’ve been long interested in this martial art since that capoeira movie “Only The Strong” IM SURE YOU NUTS HAVE WATCHED IT ! emoticon Just that i havent found an academy for one (Up until now that is) Im already proud and happy for you guys, and i would feel even more so, after i join your class in a months time. emoticon FAQ Section has really served its purpose, and has answered most of my questions. To all you guys, great job so far. See you guys soon. emoticon

57

siriema:

2005-07-15: 17:14:10

Decill: Welcome aboard and thanks for sharing your enthusiasm with us! emoticon It’s always great to know that people are enjoying capoeira just as much as the seniors are.

Azrael: We’re glad the FAQ section was of help!Looking forward to having you join us soon.

Guest asking about religious stuff: I’m also from a christian family and had to face a lot of opposition from my parents when I first put my foot down about wanting to pursue capoeira. Do invite them to observe a class or two, if that would help set them at ease with the idea of you taking up the sport. Hope you can join us too. emoticon

Hi W.M sure feel free to pop by for a preview ! Come in around 8 pm before the class starts so that you can mingle around . Beginners classes run from Monday till Friday where as the Advance one is only on Mon, Wed and Fri.

If you pay the fees for the month you can come as often as you like ! Try not to burn yourself out by coming 5 times a week though emoticon Hope to see you soon !

thanks! i’ll come and check it out for sure! i think i saw two of you on latte@8 last year or was it this year? i forgotten what u guys did though. haha.. i would like to ask further questions . hope u guys dont mind . is your centre equipped with mats or matresses? do u guys teach Back Hand Springs or Back Tucks later on?

62

w.m:

2005-07-24: 13:24:40

one more thing . if i come every night for the beginners’ class. do u guys teach the same stuff?

63

decill:

2005-07-25: 01:06:05

Ahm … you’ll learn all the basic moves in the beginners class and as for the more flowery and fancy moves, you will get to that in time. Sometimes it’s all about initiative.

As for mats and matresses that’s only available for the Gym class where you learn how to do the superman stuff! In the normal classes yeh we do a set of drills and work on our moves so that we can condition our body to do more complex movements (Not all the same thing though).

Ain’t no point proceeding if your basics are flawed right? Don’t worry, the classes are fun and exciting! Any further questions you can please proceed to the next class and ask the instructor emoticon Cheers !

Workshops are 150 for 2 nights of training under Mestre Pintor.

hehehe hi Pat, i’m even stiffer! don’t worry you’ll get to train your flexibility, strength and stamina when you join the classes! Sure the first few times will hurt like mad but if you do your practices properlly and have a good stretch before starting then your body will adapt!

As for those who have not so powderful bodies don’t worry, with the training you get, both your physical and mental capacity will increase emoticon We all have to start from somewhere yeh? I’m pretty weak in the stamina side but after coming to classes for 2 months+ it’s improving!

Oh as for QBA feel free to come … it’s open for anyone but for the cover charge thingy you will have to contact those with their numbers listed in the main page for more queries. Cheers !!

hello capoeiristas! I live in ampang but I would really like to venture out towards PJ to join classes. I’m new (so my jinga still looks kinda effed) but anywho, I was wondering, if I wanted to get there using the public transport system, which train would I use and what would be my final destination? Also, from the train station, is the academia near by? Thanks

Hey Dian, yes classes are open to everyone, you get 1 free trial class, attend as many classes as you like per month, there are no intakes, you can join anytime, but most people join in the beginning of the calendar month to take full advantage of the monthly allocation of classes.

Hi, I read a bit more about the history of capoeira and it sounds really great!

Does Bantus practise batizados and apelido on the new members? If so, in what way?

Here is the thing, the fees is 100 or 120?? In the web stated 100 while a friend of mine told me it is 120. I need clarification, thank you.

Hey Jay, we just posted the fees up on our site (right side under the academia address). Your friend is correct, the fees has gone up to 120.

Based on your training schedule, there aren’t classes for beginners on weekends. Is there a possibility of having them on weekends? I’m really interested but am unable to attend on weekdays due to my working hours. Please advise.Thanks.

Hello Bantus emoticon A student of mine recently went to train with your group and brought some of your shirts with him. I really like the material, and since I am organizing a workshop in june (you´re invited to come-it´s 24 hours of capoeira non-stop!) i would like to sell really good shirts, like yours emoticon Is there a way to purchase t-shirts of the brand “Plastic” in Europe, or maybe would someone from yopur group held me import them here? Please contact me if possible: Vaqueiro83@hotmail.com Thanks and see you soon!
