Song Lyrics
Friday, 11th March 2005 | 9 Comments
Music is one of the defining features of capoeira which sets it apart from other forms of martial arts. It plays a critical role in any roda, as the bataria’s rhythm, speed and intensity dictates the nature of the game played by the two capoeiristas within the circle.
Here are lyrics to songs commonly sung in a Bantus roda which you could try to commit to memory:
- É O Mar Vai Virar Sertão
- Jogar Na Roda Da Bantus
- Grupo Bantus Chegou
- Vamos Jogar Capoeira Domingo
- Paraná
- Sim Sim Sim Não Não Não
- Quem Vem Lá Sou Eu
- Chora Maria Chora
- Eu Sou Bantus Capoeira
- Lá Lá É
- Moça Bonita
- Beira Mar
- A Hora É Essa
- Ô Lelê
- Jogar Capoeira De Angola

Don’t worry, they may not make much sense to a first-time reader but turning up for public rodas and music sessions will definitely help!

Wow wow wow!! Did you do this Tartaruga? This is really super… You know from what I remember, out of all the search I used to do for songs this really must be the most complete Capoeira Song Archive on the net… I mean 60 pages of songs… not to forget the Bantus songs… A whole book of them… I dont think it gets better…
Thank you so much to make this so easily and readily available for us… of course to learn them it would take some time but you just made life so much easier…
many times after the rodas Rafael’s warm sound still echoed in my ears… and I somehow remembered the chorus but wondered “hmmmm what was that part he was singing? it was soooo nice”. Always thought goddamn one of these days I have to just get him to write it down for me… and now! here it is… perfecto!!
I am so proud that our group is the one who perhaps has the most complete song archive on the net (from what I have seen so far anyways), and I hope that we all wont take it for granted that its all there, because its really such a treasure…
I still remember before I started Capoeira, when I would meet people playing I would sometimes go up to them and ask them if they will write down the song for me and sing it for me so I could record it,because I love the music so much and its not like you can walk into a record store and buy a Capoeira CD, and they were such treasures to me, I still have a copy of a friend singing Oh sim sim sim…
so this is definately a great gift to us all and I hope that all of us including myself will put it to good use…
Again thanks for the great work… sorry I kept balabbing on because its really exciting… and sorry for the wrong English (not very good for a teacher going-to-be but I guess my students wont see this… ![]()

Hey guys,
it’s Caçapa here from GBC Japão. Just letting you know about the song lyrics book. I originally found it over at Capoeira Acre but those guys don’t seem to know where it came from either. I posted the PDF on the GBC Australia website and Tartaruga borrowed it from there. My guess is a Patrick Hourani, the author of the original MS Word document as listed in the document properties or Stoney Mahoney (probably a fake name) in the PDF properties. But it still remains a mystery.
Any way, part two to this post, I’ve created an even BIGGER document, and I’ve been collating the songs when I get the time. I’m going to release this document to the public, and call it the “Capoeira Lyrics Project”. It will be open for anyone to edit, add to or delete, and use as they please. At the moment, it is 147 pages big
There are many resources on the net, but I think the “Capoeira Lyrics Project” will be one of the biggest yet. However, it’s probably missing a lot of Group specific songs that I overlooked. I just have to sort out the Samba de Roda and Maculele sections.
Check the Bantus Mundo site for updates soon. Hopefully it will be up this week.

Great job on the lyrics project. I understand the tediousness of the task as I also tried to do the same thing but was only able to post it on our personal groups site. We also tried to separate them into corridos, quadros and ladainhas and offer them as three separate books; recommending the corridos for the beginners and the quadros and ladainhas for the more experienced.
There are soooo many different versions of the essentially the same song
My “next” task is to include some kind of audio snippit so that even first-time viewers can also appreciate the beauty of capoeira music.

Oi Capoeira Camará, yeah, it is a long and tedious task, but it was such a learning experience for me. I’m glad I spent all that time working on it. I know there are many other documents circulating around with “complete” or incomplete lists of capoeria songs. But capoeira was never ment to be summed up in one document. Viva Capoeira! axé galera.

The song book is truly a service to the capoeira community (especially for us newbies). Thank you so much. Also, I want to applaud your post-workout maintenace tips. Very sound advice from a Chinese Medicine and practical perspective.
Axe!
